Nature-Based Solutions: Constructed Wetlands

Planted gravel beds that treat wastewater from condominiums, institutions and neighbourhoods with little or no energy, run by the community together with the water utility.

Why it suits a water utility

Treatment your team can afford to run

  • Low running costs: mostly gravity-fed, with no chemicals and simple routine maintenance.
  • Robust: keeps treating through power cuts and changing loads.
  • Water to reuse: treated water for toilet flushing, gardens and green spaces in dry seasons.
  • Fits the neighbourhood: a planted green space between the blocks, not a plant room.
  • Built locally: local contractors, local gravel and plants, and operators trained on site.

Constructed wetlands with the Adama and Shashemene water utilities

Government condominium estates were built with septic tanks but no sewer and no outlet. As the tanks filled, sewage surfaced between the blocks and backed up into ground-floor homes. In close collaboration with the local water utilities, our team delivered three constructed wetlands that give the tanks a safe outlet and treat the wastewater on site.
